Caring for your new braces

The first step in caring for your braces is to learn what everything is called, so you can communicate with the office staff and Dr.Zand easily.

  1. BRACKET: The attachment bonded to the tooth
  2. ELASTIC LIGATURE: A small plastic rubber band that holds the wire on the bracket
  3. LIGATURE WIRE: A tiny wire that ties the wire to the bracket
  4. ARCHWIRE: A long removable wire that fits around each arch and fits into the bracket slots
  5. HOOKS: Used to attach rubber bands

Foods to Avoid During Treatment

Eating the right foods and avoiding too much sugar and soda is essential during your treatment. Braces are appliances that can easily be damaged by eating hard foods, and often soft or sticky foods can lead to cavities and loosen or dislodge your brackets.

Avoid hard foods such as:

  • Candy
  • Ice
  • Corn Chips
  • Jerky
  • Nuts
  • Corn on the cob
  • Pizza crust
  • Popcorn

Avoid Soft foods such as:

  • Bubble gum
  • Gummy Bears
  • Taffy
  • Caramels
  • Starburst
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • other chewy candy

Also, don’t bite into foods like apples, rather cut them into small pieces so you can easily chew them with your back teeth. Avoid drinks that contain sugar like soda and don’t suck on lemons, limes or ice.
